New Study Suggests Hair Transplants Could Help Migraine Sufferers
Getting a hair transplant is an effective way to permanently restore a receding hairline, but could it be the remedy for migraines too? In late 2017, several tabloid newspapers reported that Turkish doctors had found evidence that hair transplants can cure migraines.
The Study: Hair Transplantation in Migraine Headache Patients
The original report about hair transplants and migraines was published in PRS Global Open, a medical journal for plastic surgeons. It described how the Turkish researchers had seen a significant reduction of migraine symptoms in 6 patients who had undergone hair transplant surgery. However, they failed to find a reason why this beneficial side-effect was happening and said that larger studies would be needed to further investigate the findings.
Beat Headaches and Hair Loss with One Surgery?
With the report describing hair transplants as a “simple and easily applied procedure” to treat migraines and alopecia at the same time, it may sound like the perfect option if you suffer from both of these conditions. However, there are a couple of points to consider before you decide that you want to have the treatment.
First, note that the results are from a very small study of just 6 individuals with a history of migraines. Second, the migraine symptom reporting was done by the patients themselves, which may lead to less-than-accurate results. This is really very little evidence to draw conclusions from.
The Best Treatment for Your Hair Loss Condition
A final important point to bear in mind is that hair transplants are not suitable for everyone. The best treatment for you will depend on your hair loss stage and condition, as well as your goals for hair restoration.
